LTO Tapes

Linear Tape-Open refers to the magnetic tape data storage technology that originated in the late 1990s. It was developed as the open standards substitute for the proprietary magnetic tape formats. Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Quantum, and IBM control the LTO Consortium, which directs the entire development and license management. They also control the certification of media and mechanism manufacturers. The standard form-factor of Linear Tape-Open is known by the Ultrium name, whose ninth generation was announced in 2020. It can hold till 18 TB in a cartridge of similar physical size. LTO tapes are widely popular for large and small computer systems, especially for backup purposes.
